π What is a Light Year?
A light-year (ly) is an astronomical unit of distance that represents the distance light travels in one year in a vacuum.
β οΈ Important clarification: A light-year is a unit of distance, not time! It measures spatial distance, despite containing the word "year" in its name.
The light-year was first used in the 1830s by German astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, who measured the distance to 61 Cygni as approximately 10.3 light-years.
Light travels at approximately 299,792.458 kilometers per second β the fastest speed in the universe. The light-year is based on this constant, making it an extremely precise distance unit.
π How Many Kilometers in a Light Year?
Calculation:
1 year (Julian) = 365.25 days = 31,557,600 seconds
1 light year = 299,792.458 Γ 31,557,600 = 9,460,730,472,580.8 km
Perspective: At 900 km/h (commercial jet), flying 1 light year would take about 1.2 million years.

β οΈ Important Notes
- This tool uses the IAU standard Julian year (365.25 days) for calculations
- Extremely large numbers (>1e15) are displayed in scientific notation
- Reminder: Light-year measures distance, not time β don't confuse it with "year"
- All calculations are performed locally in your browser β no data leaves your device
